This is the 'Yes, We Are Open' Season 1 trailer.
Small business is the backbone of Canada’s economy, but it isn’t for the faint of heart. Every year in Canada tens of thousands of businesses are born, however every year almost the same number fail. A lot can be learned from failure, but that’s just sad and depressing.
“Yes, We Are Open” is a podcast that tells the stories of those that survive. How did they do it? What can we learn? Al Grego, of Moneris travels the country to tell these stories of challenge and perseverance. Whether you’re a small business owner yourself, or you’re thinking of starting one someday, these cautionary and motivational stories will provide you with the lessons and inspiration to help you on your way.
Small business, the backbone of the Canadian economy.According to the Government of Canada in 2019 there were 1.23 million employer businesses.
Of these, 97.9% were small businesses. As of 2019, small businesses employed almost 70% of the total private labor force in Canada.
In 2016, small businesses contributed to over 40% of Canada's gross domestic product. Small business in Canada is no small matter. And starting a small business is not for the faint of heart. It takes courage, commitment, dedication, preparation, hard work, and yes, even a little luck to survive.
Between 2013 and 2017 in Canada, the average number of small and medium sized enterprises that were created was over 95,000.
But the average number that disappeared was 90,600. Those are very bleak numbers. The recent pandemic will most assuredly see that number increase dramatically.
But what of those survivors? How did they do it? What was their secret? What could we learn from them?
Join me over the next 10 weeks as I visit these businesses and try to tell their stories.
Is there a secret to their success or a method to their survival?
We'll find out together on the ‘Yes,We Are Open’ podcast.
